Catharsis by Music
Music is emotions in motion. Each moment an experience suspended in seconds of time. Food, language and other aspects of an alien cultural identity can take a while to get accustomed to. But, music can bind in seconds.
Classical music is the foundation of other variatons. It also has a calming effect to allow listeners to relax.
Rap can be viewed as an expression of angst at the inescapable nature of ghetto life. The most sunny days that turn dark by gunshots. A tale of short lived lives and bleeding hearts. As we listen to the music, we can visualize the desperation and the calls to escape.
Heavy Metal has been a personal favorite. The sheer violence of metal on metal is a burst of raw energy and deep seated anger. Sometimes, the visualizations on jacket covers are close to pure horror and the music speaks to the beast in all.
Elecronic music is a shot of adrenalin – a cacophony of ecstasy and a celebration of youth. A momentarty burst of energy and beats that are synthetic but touch natural untapped energy. EDM and house music appeal to millennials sense of instantly gratifying experiences.
Country music expresses the soul of the south, fields of corn and soy and young love in the fields often accompanied by a glass of whisky or soda in a Dixie cup. It’s easy to visualize being young, running in the fields and the most sensitive senses that can experience the scent of grass and the coming of spring. On the other side of the universe, Punjabi folk music in India is a vibrant burst of energy and color that often celebrates the harvesting season and the beauty of agricultural life. Country music in the USA also happens to be the fastest growing genre:
Music speaks to universal human emotions and doesn’t need language to bind. At first, many genres of music can sound alien but if you search for the soul, you find that the genre represents a set of emotions that you can identify with. Just as learning a new skill can be hard, developing a liking for different sounds can be hard. As they say, no pain no gain. In the case of music though, the sheer joy cannot be compared to the pain of learning. My wish for all – travel through music and keep exploring alien sounds to discover your own – http://srogers.carto.com/viz/14ebbf8c-ac44-11e4-8a55-0e018d66dc29/embed_map
