I Have Something to Say

One reason why Artificial Intelligence (AI) Will Never Replace Writing (or any Art for That Matter)

To describe a tempest of elements is not easy, but to describe a tempest of the soul is impossible — Marcus Clarke, For the Term of His Natural Life

I was one of those artists pondering if my art and I will be rendered obsolete by Artificial Intelligence. Personally, using ChatGPT feels like cheating even though it may help my grammar. I prefer imperfection to cheating. Does that mean I am destined to be a Luddite in an AI enabled world? Perhaps. I am more sanguine though. Over time, I will become comfortable with AI as an enabler of my artistic pursuits. In reality, almost all of humanity must get comfortable with robots. Robots are already part of our everyday lives.

God created cells; humans created code.

If you are an artist, ask yourself:

Will you ever give up expressing yourself even if nobody buys your work?

AI can assist with writing or any other art form. However, writing or any other art form is a very human attempt at self expression and not just an endeavor undertaken purely for monetary gain. Of course, the publishing, media and art industry monetizes art for purely economic reasons but the raison d’être for any artist is pure self expression that is then loved by other humans — a soul connecting to other souls with art as a medium. In sum, most artists would agree with Marcus Clarke in that describing the tempest of the human soul is impossible. Furthermore, if it’s impossible for humans, it is inconceivable for an unconscious creation in the form of Artificial Intelligence to do so. For that reason alone, AI can never replace a very human need for self expression.
